主要研究内容


Due to increasing demand of energy usage, the existing energy storage technologies (e.g. battery) need to be evolved. Currently, the battery materials are mostly made from expensive and rare metals, but the duration of life time is short. In addition, the disposal and recycle of batteries cause different level of environmental concerns. Hence there is an increasing requirement for the development of new battery materials that can operate for many cycles at high power and with high round-trip energy efficiency. They should also be cost effective too. Electrode materials made from nanoparticles have gained great scientific interest since the properties of materials change when their size approaches nanoscale and when the percentage of atoms at the surface of a material becomes significant. Thus, the energy absorption increases hundred folds with nanoparticles. The purpose of this research is to develop novel nanoparticles as new battery materials by means of solution plasma process. Inexpensive and recyclable nanoparticles will be experimentally investigated as potential materials of battery electrode. We believe the electrodes should be capable of large-scale energy storage containing high rate of charging and discharging capabilities and long durable time life (up to 30 years). For short-term research (2 years), we plan to synthesize new nanoparticles battery electrode materials by solution plasma. As for the long-term research (5-10 years), the solution plasma process will be optimized and ready for industrial and commercial applications.
