Beyond the First City: What It Takes to Scale Autonomous Driving to New Places
Autonomous vehicles have moved beyond research demonstrations and are now operating in selected real-world services, from shared mobility and robotaxis to logistics. Yet these deployments remain bounded by validated routes, service areas, operating conditions, and use cases. This talk examines what it takes to scale autonomous driving beyond the first successful city. As driving systems increasingly rely on learned components, data coverage becomes a central challenge: new cities introduce different road users, rules, weather, and rare safety-critical cases. Current technical efforts address these gaps through real-world data curation, sensor-data augmentation, and scenario synthesis, while continuous testing, deployment feedback, infrastructure, and public-private collaboration remain essential for scalable autonomous mobility.
